9 Ways to Retain Hydration and Glow in your Skin

Posted by Rju Hydration Team on

Dear Reader,

Greetings from your hydration buddies at Rju! Welcome to the first edition of the Rju Water Wisdom Blog, where we strive to create awareness about skincare and celebrate skin every day!

Skincare as a topic has always been much-discussed by women across all walks of life! But despite the over-abundance of content on skincare, most of us have limited knowledge and frequently hand out skincare tips that may lack a scientific basis.

Clear, glowing skin boosts confidence and who doesn’t love it when their skin looks healthy. In this edition of the Rju Water Wisdom Blog, we bring to you some valuable insights into the different ways in which we can retain hydration and maintain glowing skin.

The key to achieving glowing and healthy skin is keeping it hydrated. It is a fairly simple and straightforward concept that lies at the root of all skincare regimes. However, it is also one of the most frequently ignored aspects that lead to poor skin health.

Hydrating skin well and adequately can help in:

  1. Preventing dryness and flakiness of skin
  2. Preventing itchiness, which causes redness of skin
  3. Making skin look younger and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  4. Improving the elasticity of skin and making it soft and glowing

When the outermost layer of our skin does not receive sufficient hydration, our skin becomes dehydrated and starts losing its glow.

How to preserve the hydration levels of skin?

If hydrating skin is so important, it brings us to the obvious question – how do we preserve the hydration levels of skin? Retaining skin’s hydration is not too complex, but id does require committing and sticking to a consistent skincare routine.

Here is a list of simple steps, carefully curated by the Rju hydration team, which can help you get going on your skincare hydration journey.

1. Drink loads of water

While the most obvious, this is also the most important step of a healthy skincare regime. It is no secret that water is the key source of hydration for our body. As our bodies are made of almost 70% water, it helps us to maintain the hydration levels in our bodies, including our skin.

Our skin is always exposed to the environment, due to which it is under constant attack from pollutants and external aggressors, that dry up the water and moisture in it. And so, it is essential to replenish the hydration levels of skin by increasing our water intake.

Although the ideal amount of water intake differs from person to person depending on their age, height, and weight, experts recommend that an average adult must have at least 2.5 to 3 litres of water every day. Assuming each glass is of 250ml, this translates to about 10-12 glasses of water a day!

2. Moisturize, moisturize & moisturize some more

This is the one step that must never ever be skipped in our daily skincare routine. Moisturizing skin daily is essential as it helps in locking in moisture and prevent it from drying out. Imagine your moisturiser as being your defence against water loss from the outer layer of your skin.

Choosing the right moisturizer for your face is also critical. Make sure it contains ingredients that are good for your skin and are genuine, and which are adequately hydrating for your skin. At Rju, we pride ourselves on the authenticity and goodness of our ingredients. And being water-inspired, hydration is always a key focus for all our products.

3. Use the “right” skincare range for your skin type

One of the most common mistakes that we make is buying skincare products without checking its suitability with respect to how it reacts and works on our skin. In case of a negative experience, most of us tend to jump to a different set of products, with the results often being the same.

This is a very unhealthy way to treat skin, as the different ingredients and chemicals can potentially damage skin due to multiple exposures. If understanding the contents is too complicated, take help from professionals who will analyse your skin and its problems and suggest the best skincare products for you.

Also identify the skin type that you have and use products that are specially designed for that skin type. At Rju, we have multiple sets of specially curated skincare ranges, which provide bio-specific hydration regimes depending upon your skin type.

4. Avoid Cosmetic Ingredients that are dehydrating

Using makeup is a great way to present yourself to the world, and it is something that helps boost confidence for a lot of people and prepares them to face the world.

However, the unfortunate truth is that makeup can also be harmful for skin. Certain makeup ingredients may deplete moisture from skin, making it dry and prone to ageing. Always ensure that the makeup products you use contain safe ingredients, and make sure to remove all makeup at the end of the day with a gentle makeup remover. Never sleep with your makeup on as it damages skin in the long run.

5. Don’t skip Sunscreen

The importance of using sunscreen on your face and body cannot be emphasized enough. Using a sunscreen on a regular basis is one of the easiest ways of protecting your skin from the harmful effects of the sun.

The UV radiation from the sun damages skin cells, which leads to pigmentation, drying out and premature ageing. This is one of the leading causes of formation of wrinkles, making you look older. In addition, excessive sun exposure may also lead to serious diseases like skin cancer. Always use a sunscreen even though you may be indoors as UV radiation is present in an indoor environment as welll

Choosing the most suitable sunscreen for your face and body will ensure that your skin is protected from the dangerous rays of the sun and its undesirable effects.

6. Avoid Harsh Soaps for facial use

The harshness of some ingredients in regular soaps can damage the protective layer of your skin and strip it of its naturals oils that are necessary for maintaining its health. In addition, many of these soaps may disrupt the pH balance of your skin. Always ensure to use only facial cleansers that are mild and specially formulated for facial skin, and which also help to maintain its pH balance, while providing effective cleansing action.

Keep in mind that cleansing your face excessively can have an adverse effect and lead to dehydrating it. Remember to cleanse your face not more than twice a day to keep it clean, healthy and hydrated.

7. Don’t forget to exfoliate

Exfoliating helps to get rid of dead skin cells along with the dirt and debris that has settled in the pores of your face. By removing dead skin cells and deep cleaning the skin, it becomes easier for it to absorb the nourishment from the moisturizer and other skincare products you use.

But a word of caution again! Excessive exfoliation can have adverse effects on your skin, just like excessive cleansing. For most people, a gentle facial scrub used once or twice a week, usually does the trick and that’s what is recommended by the Rju hydration team. Also remember to use exfoliants that use natural ingredients as opposed to synthetic cleansing beads, as these are better for your skin, and for the environment!

8. Take quick and warm showers only!

It certainly feels great to take long, hot showers, which help to wash away your worries and destress you. But on the flip side, this also results in washing away the naturals oils and hydration from your skin. If your skin prunes while taking a bath, you’ve probably overdone it!

In addition, the right temperature of water is also important. Hot showers tend to make your skin dry by damaging the cells located in the epidermis (the outer layer) that hold moisture in your skin.

Keeping these points in mind, the Rju hydration team advises you to always keep your showers short and use gentle cleansing body washes that cleanse effectively, without harming your skin.

9. Plan a diet rich in nutrients

Eating a nutrient-rich diet helps our whole body remain healthy, and also enhances the texture and tone of your skin. Consuming vegetables and fruits that have high water content also help to improve the health of your skin by providing hydration and nutrients that are necessary for your skin.

Leafy vegetables and fruits like spinach, watermelon, sweet potato, avocado, cucumber, broccoli, oranges etc. are some of the foods that must be included in your diet to get soft and supple skin. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are your best friend for eating healthy and ensuring great skin.
